Antipodes of the rest of the world

The antipodes of Ireland are located in the South Pacific Ocean. No part of Irish territory has a direct terrestrial correspondence on the opposite side of the world, so the entire country projects onto water.

This oceanic region is situated at high latitudes in the Southern Hemisphere, coinciding with the "Furious Fifties," a remote area of deep waters with constant winds and rough seas due to the lack of significant land barriers.

  • The reverse projection of the island of Ireland is located just south of New Zealand, in a vast expanse of ocean about 600 km (less than 400 miles) away from the South Island of New Zealand.
  • New Zealand is the only sovereign nation close to the Irish antipodes, making both countries opposite ends of the globe.
  • The antipodal area lies right next to the Campbell Island Marine Reserve (Moutere Ihupuku), a protected zone for marine life.
