Antipodes of the Philippines

The antipodes of the Philippines are situated in the heart of South America, occupying a vast region of the Brazilian interior. Thus, the Philippines, even being a country composed of thousands of islands, constitutes one of the most notable cases worldwide where an entire nation has its antipodes exclusively on dry land.

The geographic correspondence mainly covers an area of the Brazilian interior on the other side of the world, where the projection of the Philippines forms a series of discontinuous areas that overlap with the South American savannas and tropical jungles, very far from any sea coast.

A small portion of the Philippine antipodes coincides with the territory of Bolivia and even Paraguay. This fact, linked to the shared colonial past of the three nations, demonstrates the vast global influence Spain had in the 17th and 18th centuries by controlling territories that were diametrically opposite to each other.

• The Brazilian state of Mato Grosso receives most of the antipodal area, serving as the geographic counterpart for major islands like Luzon and Mindanao.
• Part of the Philippines' antipodes extends into Bolivia, where the antipodes of northern Philippine cities such as Baguio, Vigan, and Laoag are located.
• The northernmost tip of the archipelago, including locations in the Batanes islands like Itbayat, has its opposite point within the territory of Paraguay.
